About
I completed my undergraduate degree in Physiology from the University of Bristol and obtained my MSc and PhD in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University where I was awarded the Loughborough University Postgraduate Progression Prize for outstanding academic achievement. My doctoral thesis examined the mucosal immune response to exercise and how this relates to markers of stress and infection risk. During my PhD I held a position as an Applied Physiologist with British Swimming where I provided physiological support and conducted research projects with the high performance swimming squad at Loughborough University in preparation for World and Olympic events.
Following my PhD, I conducted a Research Associate position at Loughborough University to investigate the role of regular polyphenol intake on exercise-induced oxidative stress. My current post is Senior Lecturer in Human Physiology at Kingston University which I have had since 2013.
I am currently the School representative on the Faculty Research Degrees Committee, and sit on the Athena Swan and Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity group within the School. I am also the Chair of the University's Sport, Exercise, Nutrition and Health research hub and the Physiological Society representative for our department.
I represented England in Squash and am passionate about environmental issues and planetary health.

My principle research interests focus on exercise-induced stress, the immune response and the role of nutritional interventions on these responses. This involves the study of the general population, individuals with chronic conditions such as obesity associated disorders (e.g. cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes) and athletes. In addition, I am interested in markers of cardiovascular risk/type 2 diabetes, inflammation and hormones of appetite regulation, translating this research into at risk and underrepresented populations e.g. BAME and women to address the data gap in these groups. Other interests lie in extreme environments e.g. heat/cold exposure, and responding to the increased influence of climate change on physiological responses, performance and health. I have provided scientific support to organisations such as British Swimming, England Rugby and professional football clubs. My work has been supported by external grants including GSK, Nestlé, NHS and UKIR.
