About
I am an award-winning researcher and engineer with a PhD in Industrial Engineering (Renewable Energy) from the University of Florence. I currently serve as the Head of Department for Mechanical Engineering and a Senior Lecturer in Renewable Energy at Kingston University London. In this leadership role, I drive departmental strategy and curriculum innovation, ensuring that our students gain the future skills needed to thrive in a digital-first, sustainable economy. As Course Leader of the Renewable Energy Engineering MSc programme, I educate and mentor students on the latest developments and best practices in renewable energy, preparing them for careers in this rapidly growing field.
My research focuses on advancing and refining renewable energy technologies, with a particular emphasis on solar thermal systems, thermochemical heat storage, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), waste heat recovery, and the application of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods in renewable energy. I have extensive expertise in the design, modelling, and testing of various types of solar thermal collectors, including ST, PT, PVT, and C-PVT systems. In the field of heat storage, my research involves developing, screening, and assessing innovative materials capable of efficiently storing and releasing heat, with a particular focus on improving cyclic performance and scaling up thermochemical storage (TCS) systems from laboratory scale to real-world demonstrations. I have supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students.
I have a strong track record of securing research and development funding from major national and international bodies, including Horizon Europe, the British Council, and the British Academy. I have successfully coordinated multi-million-euro international consortia and managed large-scale projects focused on climate, energy, and mobility. My work aligns closely with the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, particularly in supporting manufacturing innovation and the transition to clean energy.
Beyond my leadership at Kingston, I am an Expert Member of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Task 67 and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I have also had the opportunity to work across several leading UK institutions, including Swansea University (2021–2023) and Loughborough University (2020), where I contributed to projects related to renewable energy technologies and thermal energy storage.

I am currently involved in various renewable energy projects, including solar energy, thermal energy storage, and energy optimisation. These projects cover topics such as solar plant location selection, energy cost optimisation, and innovative energy storage systems. I have supervised several students for their renewable energy and material/mechanical engineering projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including those from the Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centers (EUREC).

Previous research activities
- Developed a novel small-size solar PTC for medium temperature applications. Indoor and outdoor testing was conducted to obtain experimental results which were used to validate the CFD model. The design was then upscaled to the system level using TRNSYS, Polysun, and TRNBuild software for the development of energy supply models.
- Developed a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methodology for screening and selection of novel materials suitable for heat storage applications using graph theory and matrix approach.
- Developed a novel stacked bed reactor for thermochemical heat storage, with a focus on the importance of reactor design in the efficient use of storage materials for background space heating.
- Developed novel PVT collector design called H-pattern.
- Conducted extensive research on the development and testing of novel salt/matrix thermochemical heat storage materials.
