Mr Alex Scott-Whitby

I joined Kingston as Associate Professor of Architecture in 2023. Prior to joining Kingston I was the leader of the Architecture and Physical Design Cluster at the University of East London, and BSc Architecture Course Leader. I have previously taught at the Architectural Association, Cardiff University and at the IUAV in Venice.

I combine my role at Kingston with being a director of ScottWhitbyStudio, an award-winning architecture and urban design practice based in the London. My work and the work of the studio has won numerous awards both nationally and internationally, most recently the 2022 Dezeen Award for Rebirth, and the 2023 RIBA McEwan Award for the practice's rejuvenation of the Jubilee Pool in Penzance. The practice was honoured to be named as one of the finalists in the Architectural Review's Emerging Architecture Awards 2023.

My particular research expertise focuses on the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, finding new ways to reinvigorate them for 21st century use. I am currently leading projects that include the rejuvenation of The Church House in Westminster, a grade II listed office and civic building designed by Herbert Baker, a new sustainable public space outside St Paul's Cathedral and a community building on Chiltern Street in Marylebone.

I am passionate about the role that teaching and academia play in creating a healthy profession. I currently sit on the RIBA Education Awards Group, having previously been a Board Member of the British Architectural Trust and a member of the British Architectural Library, and RIBA Education Committees.
