About
I qualified as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) in 1988 and went on to qualify as a Registered Midwife (RM) in 1991. Throughout my career, I’ve developed a strong interest in supporting women affected by female genital mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). I was proud to be part of the team that established the first midwifery-led, community-based FGM/C clinic in London, which offered advice, information, and de-infibulation services to women. I’ve also had the opportunity to present on this topic both nationally and internationally, helping to raise awareness and promote best practice.
I joined the midwifery team at Kingston University in March 2017 and currently work as a link lecturer at St George’s Hospital. I enjoy working closely with students and clinical teams, and I’m passionate about promoting culturally sensitive care and empowering students and midwives to support women from diverse backgrounds.
In 2022, I completed my masters degree with a research project titled “An exploration of student midwives' perceptions about how knowledgeable and confident they feel in their ability, as they approach entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional register, to provide care for women affected by female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).” This research reflects my ongoing commitment to education, advocacy, and improving care for women through evidence-based practice.
I am also the lead Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) for the department and have played a key role in implementing the A-EQUIP model within our academic and clinical environments. This model supports midwives and students through restorative clinical supervision (RCS), professional development, and quality improvement, and I am passionate about creating safe, supportive spaces for our students to reflect, grow, and develop.
I’m proud to contribute to Kingston University’s Future Skills agenda, particularly in fostering empathy, cultural awareness, and resilience among our students. Being part of a diverse and forward-thinking academic community allows me to support the next generation of midwives in delivering safe, inclusive, and compassionate care.
