About
I am a Senior Midwifery Lecturer with over 20 years of leadership experience in NHS maternity services, specialising in clinical safety, quality improvement, and workforce wellbeing. My transition into higher education has been shaped by a deep commitment to evidence-based practice, compassionate leadership, and inclusive pedagogy.
My clinical background includes leading service transformation, achieving an Outstanding CQC rating for Maternity Services, and acting as a Safety Action Owner for CNST's compliance. These experiences have given me a strong foundation in governance, patient advocacy, and strategic leadership, all of which inform my teaching and curriculum development.
I hold a Master’s in Leadership in Health & Social Care and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I bring reality and insight into the classroom, helping students connect theory to practice through reflective learning, case-based teaching, and values-driven discussion. I regularly draw on national reports such as Ockenden, East Kent, Better Births, and the Kirkup Report to contextualise safety science and policy within midwifery education.
As a Professional Midwifery Advocate and Mental Health First Aider, I prioritise wellbeing and resilience, both in clinical teams and among students. I have delivered Human Factors, and cultural competency training across all divisions, embedding safety principles into incident reviews and risk management. I also facilitate After Action Reviews (AARs) and am trained in ACAS mediation, supporting conflict resolution and fostering psychologically safe learning environments.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in cultural competence, equity, and inclusion. I actively promote EDI principles in both clinical and academic settings, ensuring that diverse perspectives are valued and represented. I incorporate active bystander training into my educational practice, empowering students to challenge discrimination and advocate for respectful, inclusive care.
