About
I am a cardiac nurse with over 40 years of experience (I started my training as an orthopaedic nurse in 1979).
My NHS career took me from the bedside – general medicine and cardiac care units at both secondary and tertiary centres, including Bart's and the National Heart Hospital in London and in York – to central Government, where I was section head of the Department of Health policy team responsible for the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease.
Along the way, I played a significant role in establishing the Defibrillators in Public Places Initiative. I was later involved in the development of England's national programme to provide primary angioplasty (attending and speaking at the initial meeting with the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit).
I subsequently worked strategically at regional level on cardiovascular issues, including 4 years in an ambulance service as a consultant cardiac nurse/regional head of cardiovascular, stroke, and research. During this time, I became a visiting professor at Coventry University, subsequently moving to the University of Surrey in 2009 as a full professor. While at Surrey, I was Associate Dean for Health & Medical Strategy, leading the development of a 10-year strategy for the institution with NHS partners.
When I moved to the Joint Faculty here at Kingston & St George's, University of London, as Professor of Nursing, I took up a leadership role as Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Centre for Health & Social Care Research. After completing my term, I became Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing, leading a new Emergency, Cardiovascular & Critical Care Research Group.
I held external leadership roles as an Independent Non-Executive Director of South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Board member of the Association of Acute Cardiovascular Care, European Society of Cardiology, and Director/Trustee of the British Association for Immediate Care.
Qualifications
- MPhil
- RN
- FRCN
- FESC
- FAHA
- FACC
Domains
My research focuses on acutely ill cardiovascular patients - heart attack, cardiac arrest, and stroke.
I am lucky to have superb research collaborators, including the team at Warwick University's Clinical Trials Unit with whom I have worked on the PARAMEDIC and PARAMEDIC-2 trials and other cardiac arrest research.
I am currently the Chief Investigator on a British Heart Foundation-funded study exploring the use and impact of the prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram in patients with acute coronary syndromes in the primary PCI era (PHECG2). Collaborators on this include colleagues at Swansea University, the University of Leeds, and three NHS ambulance Trusts.
I have been the lead or co-applicant on over £8 million in successful grant applications.
I have a number of postgraduate research students, including three paramedics undertaking PhDs (one at my previous institution, the University of Surrey). I also mentor postdoctoral researchers elsewhere.
Specialisms
