Clearing application top tips
Do your research
To take the stress out of Clearing, start researching universities and courses before you receive your results.
We have a wide range of undergraduate courses at Kingston University for you to explore.
When Clearing opens on the 2 July, you will find a list of courses in Clearing on our website.
Have your details ready
Before you call, please make sure you have the following information to hand:
- exam results, including level two and three (GCSE and A-Levels/BTEC or equivalent)
- UCAS ID (if you have one)
It’s also very useful to have notes on the course you are applying for, some planned responses to questions you might be asked (such as why you'd like to study the course) and any questions you would like to ask the university.
Find a quiet place to call
Make sure that you call from a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed with easy access to phone and the internet.
Whilst some Clearing places may go quickly, do take a moment to compose and prepare yourself. It’s important that you make the call yourself, as universities are unable to discuss your application with another person.
Think of the call as a normal conversion – stay positive and make sure you demonstrate enthusiasm for your course and the university.
Be persistent
Our Clearing line can be very busy, so if you can't get through first time or the line is engaged, don't be put off.
We'll have a significant number of telephone lines open to deal with your queries and on results day itself, our Clearing line is open for extended hours.
Keep an open mind
You probably have your heart set on a particular course, but you’re more likely to be successful in finding a place in Clearing if you’re flexible and consider similar courses, perhaps including a foundation year, to the one you originally applied for.
Consider your options
Once you have spoken to the universities you planned to contact, take some time to consider the options available to you and pick the course and university which is right for you, which we hope is Kingston University.
Add a Clearing choice within the allotted time
Most universities will give you a window during which their offer is valid, usually 12-48 hours; so make sure you add us as your Clearing choice before this time is up.
On some selective courses there may be a first come, first served approach. In these cases you should select us as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
You'll only be able to enter one Clearing choice at a time, so only enter a course you're sure you want to accept.
Remember to check the UCAS website for the exact time on results day you can confirm your choice on UCAS Hub. In the past, this has been 3pm on A-Level Results Day.
Relax and celebrate your choice
Congratulate yourself and celebrate securing your place at university with your friends, family and supporters.
It's a good idea to visit the university you have chosen to familiarise yourself and look around before you arrive for the start of term. At Kingston University, we have a Clearing Advice Day on Saturday 15 August, where there will be plenty of people on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Yes, you can. If you have already accepted an offer through UCAS at another institution, you can use the self-release tool on your UCAS Hub account. We only recommend you do this once you have secured your place with us.
Self-release
The self-release tool allows you to release yourself into Clearing in order to accept an offer from another university.
This tool is available from July in your UCAS Hub. To avoid accidentally releasing yourself, the system incorporates several warnings to make sure you fully understand what you are about to do.
If you release yourself from your place at Kingston University by accident, don't worry. Providing the course still has spaces available, we’ll reinstate your offer with the same conditions as your original offer.
Steps to self-release
- Sign into Hub and click the ‘Decline my place' button on your homepage.
- You’ll then be taken to a page that explains what you’re able to do and there is a drop down question you need to answer in order to confirm you definitely want to release yourself in to Clearing.
- You’ll receive an email confirming you are in Clearing.
Clearing Plus
The Clearing Plus tool allows you to be matched to appropriate course(s) that you’re interested in at universities that have availability. This will show you where you can potentially secure your place at university.
Using the tool, you'll be able to express an interest in those matched courses and have the option to allow the university to get in direct contact with you. It’s available to unplaced applicants (students who haven't accepted any offers or have released themselves in to Clearing) in their Hub account.
The UCAS service allows you to move easily between universities if you change your mind about where or what you would like to study. In addition, UCAS are also offering individual support through emails, social media, and over the phone.

You can also call our Clearing line and we will advise you on your options.
