Your first week at university can feel like a whirlwind – exciting, overwhelming and packed with new experiences. Here are some practical tips to make you feel at home.
Discover our student-approved ways to help you adapt to life as student during your first week at Kingston University.
Explore Kingston upon Thames and get to know your surroundings
One of the easiest ways to feel at home quickly is to explore the local area. Going for walks around Kingston helped me feel familiar with my surroundings within just a few days. Head into the town centre, browse the shops, take a walk along the Thames, and locate your nearest supermarket or corner shop. Even something as simple as doing a food shop can help you get your bearings and figure out what's nearby and what works best for you.
Decorate your room and make it feel like home
With so much happening outside your halls, it’s easy to overlook your own space, but decorating your room is a key part of settling in. Bringing a few familiar items from home can make it feel instantly more comfortable, and Kingston also has plenty of affordable spots for home décor, including Søstrene Grene, Primark, Typo, TK Maxx and Flying Tiger. WHSmith is also a great place to pick up magazines or stationery to create a personalised noticeboard. Creating a cosy, personalised space can make a real difference during those first few weeks.
Step out of your comfort zone and talk to new people
Settling into university becomes much easier when you make the first move. Say yes to plans, start conversations in the kitchen and take the time to get to know your flatmates. I remember feeling nervous about leaving my room at first, but pushing myself to build those early connections made my university experience so much more enjoyable. Even small conversations can go a long way in helping you feel at home.
Get involved in Freshers' Week events
Freshers’ Week is one of the best opportunities to meet people and get involved in student life. Check the Students’ Union and Res Life websites, as well as their social media channels for the latest event updates. You'll also find Welcome Week activities listed on the KU app and MyKingston, so it's worth keeping an eye on those too.
Don’t miss the Freshers’ Fair - it’s a great way to explore societies, sports clubs and student groups all in one place. Joining cheerleading helped me make some of my closest friends, and whatever your interests, there's likely to be something that suits you.
Capture the memories
Your first few weeks at university will fly by, and it’s easy to forget to take photos. Bringing a disposable, digital or film camera is a great reminder to take photos and document those early memories. You'll be glad you did when you look back on your first year and see how it all began.
Starting university is a big step, but you don't have to navigate it alone. Kingston University offers a wide range of student support services to help you settle in, from academic advice to wellbeing support. You can also explore everything Kingston Students' Union has to offer, with over 90 societies and 40 sports clubs, there is truly something for everyone. Your first week is just the beginning, so make the most of it!
