London can be an expensive city, so plan your ‘free’ weekends to be, well, free. Kingston-upon-Thames and the City has a lot to offer in the way of cheap and even free activities. So note down our suggestions to really make the most of your time studying in London.
Activities for the nature lovers
Kingston University London really has the best of both worlds with city and countryside. For lovers of the outdoors there’s a whole host of nearby parks and walks to enjoy. Most notably, on the doorstep of Kington Hill campus is Richmond Park, which is the largest of London's Royal Parks and home to fallow deer.
And if that wasn’t enough of a draw, during the spring in Richmond Park the Isabella Plantation is a stunning 40-acre home to evergreen azaleas – a must-visit for a picnic with friends or just to admire this unique woodland.
If you find yourself at Penrhyn Road campus there is a stunning riverside walk along the Thames path from Kingston to Richmond, ending at Richmond bridge. This is perfect for a Sunday afternoon 5-mile waterside stroll, before a pub lunch perhaps…?
Food, museums and good views
Kingston Ancient Market in the town is open seven days a week and is a fun place to have a wander around, offering a broad range of produce and street food which is reasonably priced and great quality.
After a bite to eat, the nearby Kingston Museum is free and worth a visit. There are three permanent exhibitions: Ancient Origins, Town of Kings and Eadweard Muybridge, a local pioneer photographer. There's also a whole schedule of free events and exhibitions which change throughout the year. It’s only around a 10-minute walk from Town House at Penrhyn Road campus, so it's easy to check out between lectures or on the weekend.
Of course, if you wish to venture on a short train ride into the centre of London there’s a whole raft of free museums to choose from, including the National Gallery, the British Museum and the V&A museum. All these should be your must-visit list, if they are not already! While in the city, and if you like good views, then head to the Sky Garden or Garden at 120 for some breath-taking views of London – for free!
Entertainment
If you’re tired of walking around all day and fancy a laugh, then why not head to the Top Secret Comedy Club. This hidden gem in Covent Garden is just £1 to book on weekdays and is always a fun evening out where new, as well as very famous comedians, test out their new material. You’re not made aware if a famous comedian is performing, so it’s well worth a visit – who knows who you might see for £1!
As you can see, Kington University is the ideal location for city meets nature, where you can experience all London living has to offer but on a budget. Enjoy exploring!
