Dr M Arslan Usman

About

I am a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science with academic responsibilities in ResearchTeaching (FHEA) and Knowledge Exchange. I am a Wireless Comms technologist focused towards Multimedia Networks, actively involved in several wireless comms research projects globally and standardisation activities at WP5D of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Switzerland. My global research journey spans several countries over a period of 12 years so far, starting from Blekinge Institute of Technology-Sweden to Wireless Multimedia and Networking (WMN) research group at Kingston University (KU). This journey also includes a year as a Wireless Pre-Sales Engineer at Nokia-West Central Africa (WCA) where I was working on the project 'Moving West Central Africa towards 4G' and 4 years at Wireless and Emerging Network Systems (WENS) Lab-South Korea.

I have 3 years of industrial R&D experience as a System Architect (KTP associate) with Pangea Connected UK and KU under the highly prestigious Knowledge Transfer Partnership Program from Innovate UK. The project I worked on was about delivering enriched video compression and data transfer over 5G networks for emergency services across the UK.

My research interests include 6G Wireless Networks, 5G and Beyond (B5G), Quality of Experience (QoE) in Medical and Entertainment Multimedia, AI-Assisted Decision Making Systems and Internet of Things (IoT). I am a reviewer for several prestigious journals and conferences including IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE VTC and IEEE GLOBECOM. I have had the pleasure of chairing 5G-RAT symposiums and workshops during GLOBECOM 2019 and 2022.

I am currently supervising 4 PhD students and actively looking for PhD applicants with outstanding research profiles.

Professional practice, knowledge exchange and impact

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Standardisation Activities: I am actively involved in standardisation activities at ITU working party 5D (ITU-WP5D) involving defining the standards for IMT-2020 (5G) and IMT-2030 (6G). The activities include contribution towards vision, capabilities and evaluation of IMT-2020 and IMT-2030 candidates.

Independent Evaluation at ITU-WP5D: I am part of an independent evaluation group (IEG) that participates in evaluation of IMT-2020 (5G) candidate technologies for various KPIs including Reliability, Spectral Efficiency, Capacity Analysis etc.
