Professor Audley Genus

About

I won a joint studentship from the ESRC/EPSRC, which allowed me  to undertake and successfully complete a PhD at Aston University (between 1987-1991, supervised by Dr David Collingridge). My doctoral research was on the topic of energy technology policy and innovation related to UK North Sea oil. Since then I have pursued research on innovation and institutional change in the (renewable) energy sector and sustainable production and consumption. I left Aston University in 1993 to take up a lectureship at Brunel University and then later worked at Royal Holloway, University of London. I spent most of the 2000s at Newcastle University, where I was subject group leader for innovation. I have been at Kingston University - and a professor of innovation - since 2012 and was appointed Director of the Small Business Research Centre in January 2020.

Research

I research innovation relating to renewable energy and the institutionalisation of sustainable consumption practices, and sustainable and social entrepreneurship.

Current projects include: a project to support SMEs adopting new technology as part of the Business Basics programme of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, conducted with 14 UK university partners and overseen by the Chartered Association of Business Schools.

Recently completed projects include: 'ENERGISE' (2016-19) which was awarded 3.2 million euro under the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme; 'Community Energy in England'; and 'Knowledge Exchange for Entrepreneurship in Permaculture' (in collaboration with the Permaculture Association, funded by the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, part-sponsored by the ESRC).

I am the Chair of the Social and Sustainable Enterprise special interest group of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, a member of both the steering group of the European branch of the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Group and the editorial board of the journal Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. To date, I have supervised six doctoral students to completion of their studies and am currently a member of the supervisory team for eight full-time or part-time PhD students.
