Professor Isabella van Elferen

About

I am Professor of Music, School Director of Research & Enterprise, and Director of the Visconti Studio.

My publications address music philosophy, popular music, Gothic theory and subcultures, film and TV music, video game music, and baroque sacred music. I am on the editorial teams for The Soundtrack, Horror Studies, and Aeternum, and was guest editor for Journal for the Fantastic in the Arts (2013), Horror Studies (2016) and Contemporary Music Review (2017 and 2019). 

I supervise PhD students on a variety of topics: Milly Gunn - videogame music literacy; Malte Kobel -  the singing voice in music and sound philosophy; Pippa Lang - women in the metal subculture; Barbara Mendes - musical entrepreneurship; George Reid - chiptune fan cultures. I am external supervisor to Renee Vulto (University of Ghent) and Diederik de Ceuster (University of Louvain).
