About
I am a registered New Zealand Pharmacist. I received my PhD in ocular drug delivery from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand in 2001. I was responsible for establishing the first pharmaceutics curriculum for the School of Pharmacy, The University of Auckland, where I led the pharmaceutics team between 2007 and 2011. I continue to serve as an honorary professor at the University of Auckland.
I joined Kingston University, London as Professor (Chair) of Pharmaceutics in January 2011 and was appointed as Research Director for the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry in December 2013. I was appointed as the Inaugural Head of the newly established School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry on 1 June 2015.
I am the Editor-In-Chief of Pharmaceutical Development and Technology (Taylor and Francis; 2021 IF 3.915). I served (for 9 years) as Section Editor for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology the official journal of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (2021 IF 4.383).

I hold international patents on human and animal medicines. Our animal health patents have been commercialised in New Zealand and Australia, where I continue to consult for pharmaceutical companies, patent attorneys, and drug registration bodies.

Domains
My research spans two main areas of activity; ophthalmic drug delivery and animal health medicines. I have supervised to completion 24 Masters by Research and PhD students. I am an author on over 200 scientific research publications (papers and abstracts), a book and seven book chapters; I have attracted over $NZ 2M (£GBP 1M) in contestable research and enterprise funding jointly with colleagues in academia and industry.
Our latest award (April 2021) is from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) under their National Priorities Research Programme (NPRP), 13th cycle (NPRP13S-0126-200173). The award is to develop new treatments for diabetic retinopathies. The awarded amount is $509,807 (USD) over 3 years. This project is undertaken in collaboration with two colleagues from Qatar University.
