About
I am a professor of healthcare and policy research. My academic background is in sociology and social policy. My professional background is as a nurse, health visitor, senior NHS manager of community services.
I was Associate Dean for Research (2010–2016) and Director of the Centre for Health and Social Care Research (in the joint Faculty of Kingston University and St. George's University of London).
I was previously a senior lecturer at the Department of Primary Care & Population Sciences, University College London, 1997–2007.
I have undertaken health service research over the years in many areas, particularly in primary care and aspects of care for older adults. As I now work part time, I focus mainly on the following:
- Health and social care workforce questions, particularly regarding new roles (such as advanced clinical practitioners, physician associates, and nurse consultants), new ways of working, and recruitment and retention issues.
- Historical aspects of healthcare workforces. All my research involves the public and service users. I am particularly interested in the interface between policy and practice in arenas where public service delivery involves multiple agencies.
I am a faculty member of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and was a member of the NIHR Programme for Applied Research subpanel (2020-4). I am also a Fellow of the Queen's Nursing Institute.
In 2016, I was awarded an MBE for services to health service research, development, and nursing.
