Magazine Journalism MA: Student achievements

Celebrating our students

Kingston magazine named student publication of the year runner up at Guardian awards

Mouth magazine, written and produced by Kingston's Magazine Journalism MA students, has taken second place at the 2011 Guardian Student Media Awards. It was runner-up to the University of York in the publication of the year category.

A total of 648 entries were made across nine categories from all over the country, making this a huge achievement for the students involved. The judging panel was made up of professionals ranging from freedom of information campaigner, Heather Brooke, to Tom Whitwell, editorial director of the Times digital.

Katie McCabe, one of the Mouth editors from last year's Magazine Journalism MA course was responsible for the winning entry. She is now an editorial assistant at Archant working across local London magazines including London Life. She said: "I'm overwhelmed that Mouth won the runner-up prize. If it weren't for working on Mouth I wouldn't have landed a job in magazines, so I'm incredibly happy to see it recognised in this way."

Beth Brewster, Director of Studies Journalism and Publishing, said: "We are thrilled that a Kingston journalism publication has been honoured at the Guardian student media awards for the second year running. To be voted second best student publication in the whole country is a real accolade and a testament to the talent and hard-work of our journalism students. The River was also a finalist, after winning publication of the year last year. It didn't get a prize this time, but the nomination meant that Kingston has two of the best student publications in the UK and that's something to be very proud of."

Mouth is now available in the form of an online magazine, Mouth-online. Cara Lawson, the current student editor, said: "Mouth-online is an entertaining and informative lifestyle magazine. We take a quirky look at exhibitions, concerts, musicals, theatres, restaurants, fashion shows and the breadth of ethnic diversity around Kingston." As well as articles, Mouth-online includes videos of international students cooking dishes inspired by their homeland.
