Choose Kingston's Music Performance MMus
If you aspire to become a professional musical performer or are an instrumental teacher and would like to deepen your knowledge of music performance, this course is ideal. It focuses on performance practice, aesthetics, authenticity, contemporary performance, the psychology of performance and performance preparation leading to recitals. You will receive individual tuition on your instrument or voice from a top professional performer.
What will you study?
Kingston's MMus in Music Performance aims to create informed, skilled and insightful practitioners across a wide range of musical genres. The course covers issues of performance practice; preparation of performance; aesthetics of musical performance; analysis for performers; the psychology of performance; and performance presentation. You will also be asked to criticise and evaluate your own performances and undertake a project focusing on an aspect of some of the music you choose to perform in your final concert.
Teaching takes place through lectures, workshops, tutorials, masterclasses (recent masterclasses have included Jane Manning and Robert Taub) and individual instrumental or vocal lessons. A range of optional modules allows you to develop your skills in related topics, such as composition, conducting, arranging and ensemble performance.
As a student on this course, you will have the chance to get involved with a range of music groups at the University, with opportunities to join a wide range of ensembles.
Many of the staff in the Music department are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.
