Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Surveying - Faculty Coordinator for NSS and Student Experience
About
I am the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Surveying, and the Faculty Coordinator for NSS and Student Experience at the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment. In these roles, I am dedicated to driving academic excellence, fostering innovative research, and enhancing the overall student experience.
I hold a Dipl.-Ing. Civil Engineering degree with Distinction from the University of Patras in Greece, followed by an MSc and PhD specialising in earthquake-resistant structures and sustainable materials. My academic journey continued with a Master in Business Administration (MBA), focusing on resource management and optimisation within the higher education sector, with a particular emphasis on the National Student Survey (NSS).
As a recognised leader in my field, I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transport. My scholarly contributions include an extensive portfolio of journal and conference publications, particularly in the domains of sustainable building materials and the dynamic response of earthquake-resistant buildings. Additionally, I serve as a reviewer for numerous prestigious international scientific journals, further contributing to the advancement of knowledge in my areas of expertise.
My research interests and expertise encompass several critical sectors:
- Sustainable Materials: Investigating thermal properties, volume stability, and strength behaviour to develop eco-friendly building solutions.
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Using advanced FEA techniques to optimise the mechanical and thermal properties of concrete, enhancing structural performance.
- Dynamic Response of Structural Systems: Analysing and improving the resilience of buildings and infrastructure against seismic forces through innovative design and material application.
- Optimisation of Structural Systems: Employing FEA software to refine structural designs for superior performance under seismic conditions, ensuring safety and durability.
In my role as Head of Department, I am committed to leading a dynamic and forward-thinking department that excels in research, education, and professional practice. I strive to create a supportive and stimulating environment for both faculty and students, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
As the Faculty Coordinator for NSS and Student Experience, I prioritise enhancing the quality of education and the overall student journey. By leveraging insights from the NSS, I implement strategic initiatives aimed at improving student satisfaction, engagement, and academic success. My goal is to ensure our programmes not only meet, but exceed, the expectations of our students, preparing them for successful careers in civil engineering, construction management and surveying.
