About
I am an award-winning filmmaker, researcher and senior lecturer specialising in documentary film. My work has been screened and exhibited internationally in galleries, film festivals and on television, most recently at the Frankfurt B3 Biennale, Sunderland Short Film Festival and the International Toronto Women's Film Festival. My projects investigate the lives of marginal communities through personal narratives that reflect social or political change. I have a particular interest in representing the female experience on-screen through immersive projects. Ethnographic filmmaking, home and exile and the cinema of migration are research interests reflected in my work. Currently, I have just completed a practice-based PhD in Visual Arts at CREAM, University of Westminster, exploring cross-cultural encounters between Syrian refugee and local women in remote communities in Germany.
Before joining Kingston University in 2022, I was a senior lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) for nine years. Prior to this, I taught filmmaking at Middlesex and Regents University. In addition, I set up the film and photography department at Hillcroft College, worked with survivors of domestic violence at Women's Aid and produced a film about bullying in collaboration with inmates of Pentonville prison.
