About
My role within the School of Nursing is as a Senior Lecturer and the lead for Simulated Practice Learning (SPL).
I have, over the years, seen the shift and inclusion of simulation as an effective learning and teaching pedagogy which has been both interesting and quite exciting to me as an educator. Having been enthused by this varied and exciting form of teaching, I graduated with an MSc in Medical and Healthcare simulation back in June 2016. This was an excellent opportunity to consolidate my knowledge and experience and enhance the specialty within our SPL team. As a team we work together across the school to design, coordinate and implement effective and safe learning and teaching opportunities within a variety of simulated environments.
My key aim as SPL lead is the development and enhancement of innovative SPL delivery across a lifespan and field perspective to enhance students readiness for placement and future employment.
My prior roles have included nursing programme lead for pre-registration MSc programmes. This included the oversight of the MSc programme as a whole and the management of the programme and modules including student coordination and timetabling.
Another passion is my work and lead in the development and implementation of simulated electronic patient records, which aim to reflect the current shift in clinical practice. In collaboration with the web and multimedia team at the university we designed and developed a web based system that is used by student nurses and facilitators in SPL learning and teaching environments, while this enhances the fidelity of simulation a step further, it also embraces technology based learning for students of the future.
Before moving in to higher education and teaching roles, my experience was developed from various roles as a clinical skills technician within nursing and medical education, clinical work within acute medical wards, and short stay patient units, plus the development and shift towards the emergence of acute assessment units/wards.

Domains
As a clinical skills and simulation lecturer and lead my expertise is in the coordination and development of teaching and learning environments using innovative and creative methods of delivery. These methods need to reflect current practice and yet provide both supportive, safe and challenging student learning opportunities.
While we work to prepare students for their clinical placements we strive to also provide opportunities for experiential learning and importantly for individual students to receive valuable feedback and debriefing on their performance and care outcomes in a safe learning environment. This teaching pedagogy encourages students to develop into effective and compassionate reflective practitioners.
The balance of simulated learning environments being challenging but also safe can at times be difficult and is something that we need to be very mindful of. No student learns if they are too stressed or embarrassed to engage or overwhelmed by technology.
The use of peer, role-player, patient and mentor feedback is paramount in simulation and again the debriefing approaches need to be both effective and considerate to the learner, we aim to provide a positive experience, but also one that allows students to reflect and identify areas for future development.
