Ms Alexandra Murrell

I qualified as an adult nurse at Lewisham and Thomas Guy School of Nursing in 1985. I have 2 masters degrees 1 from Brunel University in medical anthropology and 1 in public health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

I have mainly worked in community in general practice, walk in centres, sexual health and notably in homelessness and refugee health in inner city. I have always worked in multi ethnic environments.

I have worked overseas in primary and emergency care. I have been teaching since 2016 at the London Campus of University of West Scotland professional health studies teaching on a variety of modules. I have also been supervising bachelors and masters students for their dissertations.

My first dissertation was in animal therapy as a way of doing anthropology at home by exploring animal therapy, particular for elderly people. This involved speaking to elderly in day centres, speaking to those who had therapy animals and health staff.

My second dissertation was history of overseas nurse recruitment in UK 1950-2000. This examined health policies in nurse employment and retention of nurses. It profiled changes in nurse recruitment and changes in employment practices.
