About
I am Professor of Computer Science. I hold an MScEng, an MSc, and a PhD in Computing Science from the University of St-Etienne (France, 1997). I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
After my PhD, I worked for 7 years as a researcher at Glasgow University. With co-authors, I developed the world first experimental 3D television studio, winning the IEE Reeve Premium award in 2004. At Kingston University, I have designed and applied novel pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. These have included the following:
- A stochastic context-free grammar-based framework able to handle the complexity of the protein alphabet
- A manifold-based approach allowing modelling/representation of multivariate sequences
- Enhancement of video-based action recognition using common-sense reasoning
- Meta-analysis of gene variants
- Introduction of a genomics-inspired paradigm for visual surveillance
- Game-theoretic approaches to optimise electricity consumption in a smart grid and manage PPE efficiently during the COVID-19 outbreak
- Exploitation of AI for managing domestic solar energy solutions and denoising mass spectrometry data.

I have been able to transfer my academic knowledge to industry through both contract research and projects supported by Innovate UK. I recently completed as Principal Investigator a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Instinet Global Services Ltd that delivered Machine Learning capability for Equity Trading, 2019-22. This KTP was awarded the highest grade of "Outstanding" by the KTP Grading Panel for its achievement in meeting KTP's Objectives.
At REF2014 (Research Excellence Framework), I was named as a key researcher of the Impact Case Study 'Economic benefits from sales of people-tracking and crowd-monitoring technology'.
"Research at Kingston University into methods for tracking pedestrians and monitoring crowds using computer vision techniques has been translated into commercial products by Ipsotek Ltd and BAe Systems, resulting in economic benefits to these companies from sales of these products. These products have been sold to high-profile customers including the London Eye, the O2 Arena and the Australian Government, providing significant commercial benefits, employment and growth for both companies, as well as providing an economic impact for these customers." Underpinning research includes: Tracking Human Position and Lower Body Parts Using Kalman and Particle Filters Constrained by Human Biomechanics, J. Martinez del Rincon, D. Makris, C. Orrite-Urunuela and J.-C. Nebel, IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics - Part B', 40(4), 2010
This Impact Case Study was evaluated as 3* (internationally excellent) by the REF panel and was among the 20 cases (out of the 280 submitted to UoA11 - Computer Science and Informatics) selected to highlight the impact made by UK academic Computer Science Research over the period 2008-2013 (work jointly commissioned by UK Computing Research Committee, Council of Professors & Heads of Computing, and British Computer Society Academy).
Professional and scholarly affiliations
- Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
I am Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Knowledge Exchange & Research Institute for Cyber, Engineering & Digital Technologies. As REF coordinator for UoA11 - Computer Science & Informatics, I prepared and delivered its submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF2021). This has proved Kingston University's best submission for this unit so far, as 73% of its research was assessed to be either World Leading or Internationally Excellent.
I have also national and international experience in reviewing and evaluating research papers and proposals. I have been a reviewer for the most prestigious journals in my areas of expertise (machine learning, computer vision and bioinformatics), and I am a member of the editorial boards of BMC Bioinformatics, PLOS ONE, and Pattern Analysis & Applications. I have also evaluated proposals for the Newton Fund, the UK National Commission for UNESCO, and UK (EPSRC, BBSRC & MRC) and foreign (Belgian, Chilean and Quebec) Research Councils. Finally, I am a full member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, and was one of the 46 members of the Computer Science Evaluation Group for the annual NSERC's flagship Discovery Grants Program (C$40M), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), 2019-2022.
