About
I retired from Kingston University in 2015 and now hold a position as an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment.
Before my retirement, I was a Professor of Mineralogy and Petrology at Kingston University. During 25 years at Kingston, I was Course Director for Geology and Course Director for Gemmology and Applied Mineralogy. As a mineralogist, I managed the Electron Microscope Unit for many years for the Science (subsequently SEC) Faculty in the University. I have supervised some 20 PhD students and have published 100 papers in the peer-reviewed literature.
I have served on the Council of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland for over 15 years, including two spells as Vice President. I am currently the Society's Publications Manager.
I mentor young academic staff and support former PhD students in publishing their research.
Qualifications
- BSc (Hons) Geology. Bristol University
- PhD Geology. Glasgow University
Domains
Since my post-doctoral work at Cambridge University, mineral chemistry has underpinned my research in metamorphic petrology and mineral deposit geology.
Two years at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare gave me a love of Africa while I carried out fieldwork on some of the oldest rocks on Earth. My research in Africa, and subsequently during a Research Fellowship in the Himalayan Research Unit at Imperial College, where I worked in stupendous mountain terrains, was based on detailed fieldwork, structural geology, and quantitative studies of metamorphic mineralogy and petrology.
Since coming to Kingston, research has continued in recent mountain belts such as the Himalayas, Andes, and Caucasus, Archaean terrains in southern Africa, alkaline complexes in NW Russia, and mineral deposit studies in West Africa, East Africa, Greece, and Eastern Europe.
Before retiring I led an internationally recognised Mineral Deposit Research Group supported by a large number of exploration companies.
