Over the course of a month, we immersed ourselves in the country's rich culture and gained invaluable insights into its unique approach to healthcare.
We were fortunate to be placed in a shared accommodation, with two bunk beds in a room. In the accommodation, there were other international students on placement. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds, including medicine, nursing, and teaching students.
My placement was an observational experience, where I shadowed healthcare professionals to understand how care is delivered in Vietnam. I attended placement for 5 hours a day, 4 days a week. I spent two weeks in traditional medicine with Dr Lin, observing acupuncture and massage techniques. The second half took me to the gastroenterology department, where I saw the important role of family members in providing basic patient care. One aspect that stood out for me was the emphasis on patient independence.
On my first day in the gastroenterology ward, I was surprised to see patients were given bed sheets to do their own bedding. Even an elderly patient with a falls prevention sign by their bed completed the task independently, highlighting the focus on promoting autonomy.
The experience was truly eye-opening, and I felt grateful to have been a part of it. What struck me most was the parallels between Vietnamese nursing values and our own – a fundamental commitment to caring and looking after others, despite differing approaches.
When I wasn't working, I explored the stunning landscapes of Sapa, Ha Giang, and Halong Bay with my classmates, and discovered the warm humility of the Vietnamese people. One memorable encounter was when a bus officer politely reminded us to keep our voices down, illustrating the cultural preference for quiet contemplation. My time in Vietnam also shed light on the country's complex history and the ongoing impact of its past. It was a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of the Vietnamese people.
One of the highlights of my trip was the Ha Giang Loop adventure – a thrilling 3-day motorbike journey with an organised group. We met fellow travellers from around the world, sharing stories and laughter as we wound through the breathtaking landscapes. The freedom of riding through the mountains, taking in the stunning views, and bonding with new friends was exhilarating.
This experience has left an indelible mark on my nursing journey.
We also spent 3 days cruising through Halong Bay, kayaking through emerald waters and exploring hidden caves. The scenery was simply stunning, and we enjoyed every moment of sunbathing on the deck, taking in the tranquil atmosphere. In Sapa, despite the unfriendly weather, we braved the elements, donning our rain gear, we and embarked on an 8-hour hike through the misty mountains.
Let's just say we looked a bit unconventional, clad in our bright raincoats – think Teletubbies on a mission! The rain didn't dampen our spirits, though, and we revelled in the experience. And of course, no trip to Sapa would be complete without a visit to Moana – a picturesque spot that's a must-see for any Instagram enthusiast.
The views were simply breathtaking, and we couldn't resist snapping away to capture the moment. Back in Hanoi, we indulged in the city's beauty scene, treating ourselves to a range of affordable treatments, from teeth whitening and lip blushing tattoos to facials and nail art. It was the perfect way to unwind and pamper ourselves after a busy placement.
This experience has left an indelible mark on my nursing journey, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a unique and enriching experience. The connections I've made and the lessons I've learned will stay with me forever. If you're considering taking the leap and embarking on an international placement, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so!
It's a chance to challenge yourself, broaden your perspectives, and discover new passions. You'll be amazed by the things you'll learn, not just about healthcare, but about yourself and the world around you.
So, take the plunge, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
