Students on our engineering courses can join the KU Motorsport team and help them drive for success year after year. It's a great chance to get involved with a real workplace project, enjoy appearing at a major racing circuit - and have something useful and practical to add to your CV.

Caterham Team

Since its inception in 2016 the KU Motorsport Caterham Team has gone from strength to strength. Initially starting off in the Caterham Academy series, it now races in the Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR) Trackday Championship. After our first years racing the student-focused race team have been developing the car's performance on all fronts and has recorded podium finishes as well as setting the fastest laps of the race multiple times at the UK's most prestigious motorsport venues.

The students involved are able to work in roles mimicking those of a professional race team. Typical activities include:

  • Set up and set down inspection of the race car for events.
  • Trackside support.
  • Data logging.
  • Engine development, including full engine overhauls, machining and engine mapping etc.
  • Chassis and suspension modifications and development.
  • Vehicle electronics installation including CANBus communication networks.
  • CFD analysis for aerodynamic improvements.
  • Manufacturing chassis and aerodynamic parts from various materials including metals, carbon fibre or 3D printed.

Students from the team have gone on to work for world leading manufacturers such as GoodFabs (performance exhaust manufacturers), McLaren Automotive and 2018 World Rally Champions M-Sport.
