Early Years Teacher Birth to 5 leading to Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) PGCE : Entry requirements

What you need to apply for this course

Equivalency tests

  • A good honours degree in any subject.
  • GCSE grade 4 or above (C or above for examinations taken prior to 2017) in English, mathematics and one science subject. If you do not meet the GCSE requirement in any of these subjects, you may take equivalency tests at the School of Education following acceptance of any potential offer given. View further details.
  • Trainees must be employed in an appropriate early years setting for at least 16 hours per week.
  • Trainees must be working at settings that deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage in order to be funded.
  • Sufficient employed experience, knowledge and understanding of early years.
  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service and Health checking process identifies no concerns about suitability to teach. DBS is current for the duration of the programme.

Trainees must prove that they meet all the following entry requirements before the start of the programme. All overseas qualifications must be accompanied by NARIC equivalence.

All trainees must be UK based and have the right work and study in the UK for at least the duration of their pathway.

All candidates will attend an interview day, which will include a group activity, maths and English test and an individual interview with one of the course team.

Equivalency tests

If you do not meet the GCSE English, mathematics or science requirement, you will be pleased to know you can take equivalency tests at the School of Education (free of charge) following acceptance of any potential offer given for a teacher-training course.

Please note a pass in these tests is considered to be of the same standard as GCSE grade 4, however, it does not offer a formal GCSE qualification. Therefore, passing the test(s) will allow you to gain entry to a teacher-training course at Kingston University only and not any other course or training provider.

We do encourage you to prepare for your test and have included some useful links for English, maths and science to support you with this.
