Master sound engineering and music production in Kingston University’s Visconti Studio.
Record, mix and master
This five-day immersive course offers practical training in sound engineering and music production.
Guided by an expert tutor, you’ll gain essential skills in studio operations, including:
- Working with analog mixing consoles and signal flow.
- Recording techniques with microphones and outboard processing.
- Pro Tools basics and advanced DAW workflows.
- Mixing, mastering and creating professional-quality recordings.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence to record, mix and master your own music while understanding the workflows of a professional studio.
This course is ideal for:
- Aspiring music producers and sound engineers.
- Musicians looking to enhance their production skills.
- Individuals aged 18+ interested in a career in music production.
No prior studio experience is necessary, but familiarity with musical instruments or DAWs will be helpful.
Example course structure
Studio overview, analog desk setup, signal flow, patchbay and mic techniques.
Pro Tools lesson in MIT suite, setting up mics and recording an audio signal in the studio.
Recording a drum kit with multiple mics, understanding mic phase and some advanced processing using outboard equipment. Overview of parallel processing.
Record a live performance using the techniques learnt over the week.
A hybrid mixing overview demonstrating the full use of outboard equipment and in the box DAW processing. This will utilise all the skills learnt over the week. At the end of the week, you will have the stems from all recorded material to take home and continue practising with.

Course tutor
Charlie, your course tutor, brings nearly 20 years of professional experience as a musician and studio engineer. He has worked with renowned artists such as Sir Tom Jones and Beverly Knight, and in top studios like Abbey Road and Metropolis.
An author and passionate teacher, Charlie combines modern digital production techniques with traditional analog workflows to provide a well-rounded learning experience.
What to bring
A materials list will be sent to you a week prior to the course. All other supplies will be provided by Kingston School of Art.
