About
I have a BA in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge (Churchill College), an MSc in Electronic Engineering & Computer Science and a PhD in Speech, Hearing and Phonetic Sciences (Computer Speech Technology), both from University College London.
Prior to joining Kingston University as a senior lecturer in 2003, I had worked as a researcher at the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Portsmouth and University College London, and as a Lecturer at St. Mary's College (now St. Mary's University, Twickenham) and the University of Westminster.
My research interests encompass many aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning (especially statistically-based learning) and their applications (particularly to speech and language processing, to healthcare and in education). I also have interests in mathematical and computational modelling in sport, in educational technology for assisting the teaching and learning of mathematics and computer science, and in statistical physics.

Courses taught
My research has covered quite a wide variety of topics over the years, but recently it has been primarily focused on applications of pattern recognition and statistical machine learning. Example applications on which I have worked include :
- Statistical modelling of natural language (primarily comparing patterns in spoken and written English). One such project, in collaboration with JPY Ltd (Surbiton) obtained external funding from Innovate UK for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).
- Modelling and monitoring liver tumours, observed using ultrasound imaging. This was in collaboration with Evgenidion Hospital, Athens, Greece, and King's College Hospital, London, UK.
- Modelling the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease in patients. This work was in collaboration with St. George's Hospital and the University of Surrey Medical School.
- Monitoring and modelling the well-being of honeybee colonies, using data from a variety of sensor modalities (sound, temperature, etc.) This work, in collaboration with Agsenze Ltd, Nature Development Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Kumasi, Ghana), has obtained external funding from Innovate UK for the "BeeSmart" project.
- Modelling and predicting sports results and performances (notably for cricket, tennis and association football), and investigating evidence of match fixing and other betting irregularities.
I have collaborated with several companies, NGOs and other universities on research and knowledge transfer projects, notably :
- Agsenze Ltd (UK), Nature Development Ghana (NGO) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Kumasi, Ghana) on "Bee Smart" - remote monitoring of honeybee colonies using "smart" IoT technology and machine learning. This was supported by a grant from Innovate UK.
- Instinet Europe Ltd. (London) on the application of machine learning to Electronic Financial Trading. This was supported by a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) grant from Innovate UK.
- JPY Ltd. (Surbiton, UK) on the application of speech and language technology for the development of "smart" office assistance systems. This was supported by a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) grant from Innovate UK.
- Collaboration with the Open University of Catalunya (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) on the development of "smart" technology to assist the teaching and learning of mathematics.
