About
I am Associate Professor in Mathematics & Computing and currently Head of the Department of Computer Science.
Recently at Kingston I have been Head of Department since 2019, Faculty Learning & Teaching Director (Associate Dean, Learning & Teaching) from 2022 to 2024, and Course Leader for MSc Data Science. Prior to that, I served two terms as elected academic member of the University's Board of Governors and engaged in collaborative research with colleagues and PhD students across the faculty in speech technologies, databases (supporting research in HIV and parasitology) and statistics (working with Professor Fielder and colleagues). I have also run projects with industry, including two InnovateUK "Knowledge Transfer Partnerships" (KTPs) with local SMEs and have research interests in pedagogy and technology-enhanced learning using e-assessment and other technologies in computing and mathematics education.
Before Kingston, I completed my BSc (in maths with astrophysics) and PhD (in dynamical meteorology) at Queen Mary University, London, a postdoc research post in Antarctic meteorology at the University of Sheffield and a research scientist post in Predictability and Ensemble Forecasting at the UK Met Office.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). The School of CSM adopted a general approach to teaching and learning of problem-centred learning in a recent course review, a broad direction of travel that the School's Management Group and I (as the School's Learning and Teaching Director at the time) defined. Personally I rely less on "lectures" per se and more on flipped learning, peer instruction and problem-centred classes (workshops and tutorials). I have been teaching in Higher Education at foundation (level 3), undergraduate (level 4,5,6) and postgraduate (level 7) for nearly 20 years in total.

I am principally interested in education research with interests in how people learn how to program, pedagogies appropriate to computing and maths subjects, electronic assessment (e-assessment) and technology-enhanced learning (TEL) in general, although I also work with colleagues in research projects where expertise in statistical software, data management & modelling, and mathematical modelling are required, and have contributed to projects in microbiology, parasitology, e-business and public health.
From 2022 to 2024, alongside my substantive role as Head of Department, I was Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching (Associate Dean, L&T), with responsibility for Faculty strategy and activities in the broad L&T domain across the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment. As Head of the Department of Computer Science I have responsibility for the suite of Computer Science and Mathematics courses. The staff in the School teach and conduct research & enterprise activities across the gamut of our subjects so the Heads of the two Departments and the Head of School manage the staff as a team, although I'm formally "line manager" for about half the School. Prior to becoming Head of Department, I was the School Learning & Teaching Director, with responsibility for the School's approach to the student experience, and Faculty Learning and Teaching coordinator prior to that.
