About
I completed my PhD in medicinal chemistry in 2021, under Prof. R C. Hider, King's College London. Following a few short research assignments, I joined Prof. Keith Jones' group at Kingston University as a research fellow in 2002. During that time, I worked on semi-synthetic cardioactive steroids (bufadienolides); on a project funded by the Special Trustees of St Thomas' Hospital. In 2006, I changed direction and took on the role of senior technician at Kingston responsible for the NMR facility, and supporting teaching and research in the School of LSPC. The role allowed me to collaborate with a number of academic colleagues, offering my expertise to help answer varied scientific questions. In December 2017, I returned to the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences as lecturer in organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, where I am now a senior lecturer. In addition to teaching and research, I have been involved in a number of academic citizenship roles, which are detailed under the Teaching and Learning Domain.
Qualifications
- Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC)
- PhD Medicinal Chemistry: King's College London, UK
- BSc (Hons.) Chemistry: Kingston University, UK
- D.U.T. de Chimie: I.U.T. de Chimie, Université de Rennes 1, France
Domains
Senior Lecturer
I teach organic and pharmaceutical chemistry at levels 4-7, I also teach NMR and spectroscopy data analysis and interpretation to level 5 pharmaceutical science students and to level 6 and level 7 students. I currently lead the level 4 module CH4010 Chemical Foundations: From Atoms to Pharmaceuticals, and co-lead the level 5 module CH5002 Organic and Medicinal Chemistry. I am involved in supervising a MPharm, MSc and BSc projects students during the academic year. I also am the personal tutor for around 24 students in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Open Days, Offer Holder Days and Recruitment Coordinator for the Department (September 2025 – Current)
In September 2025, I became the Open Days, Offer Holder Days and Recruitment Coordinator for the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPS). This role seeks to ensure staff in the department of CPS are booked and briefed for our in-house or online recruitment activities.
Course Director for Chemistry (June 2023 – September 2025)
I was the Course Director for the BSc Chemistry programme (F100, F123) until September 2025. I built my role drawing from my experience as Admissions Tutor and learning from various in house training events as well as networking with other directors of undergraduate teaching, at meetings organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, our accrediting body. Furthermore, I led the re-validation of the BSc Chemistry programme in 2024 and the new programme launched under it new form in September 2025.
Admissions Tutor for Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science (Sept. 2020 – June 2023)
I was responsible for reviewing a number of applications to undergraduate courses in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, working in close collaboration with the Faculty Admissions Team and the Faculty Recruitment Team. A key aspect of my role involved facilitating clearing and admissions activities in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and ensuring academic colleagues were equipped for clearing.
Qualifications
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- PhD, Medicinal Chemistry, King's College London, UK
Courses taught
My current research interests include the structure elucidation of naturally occurring bioactive compounds (RMM<800DA) using high-resolution FT-NMR spectroscopy, and organic synthesis to prepare molecules with medicinal properties. I also collaborate on a number of projects where solution phase NMR is used as a means to quantify drugs (e.g. in formulation studies), their metabolites or investigate drug stability (e.g. anticancer drug cocktails). My interest is not limited to organic-type chemistry, I am also keen to collaborate on material chemistry projects. I currently co-supervise one PhD student in cancer research.
