My research interests include subcultures, race, music, sport, and contemporary UK society. My novels are: Some Kind of Black (Abacus/ Virago, 1996) and My Once Upon A Time (Abacus' 2000).

In 2003 I co-edited, with Blake Morrison and Jane Rogers, the British Council anthology New Writing 12. I have written extensively as a cultural critic across the UK press and some of my shorter creative writing has appeared in organs such as The Times and in the anthology Oxtales (Profile). I am currently writing a sport-accented memoir.
