Ms Sherryl Mpando

My healthcare career began as a live-in carer supporting adults with spinal injuries, an experience that inspired my commitment to making a meaningful difference in people's lives. I later worked in dementia care before qualifying as a Registered Mental Health Nurse. I have since accumulated over 13 years of experience across inpatient and community mental health services.

Throughout my career, I have progressed from Staff Nurse to Ward Manager, supporting adults and older adults experiencing a range of mental health challenges. Alongside my clinical practice, I have always been passionate about education, training, and workforce development. I have delivered training in areas including risk assessment, preceptorship, dementia care, simulation-based learning, and ligature risk reduction, working collaboratively with mental health trusts and multidisciplinary teams.

I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at Kingston University, where I am committed to preparing the next generation of mental health nurses. My areas of interest include family-centred care, dementia care, mental health education, leadership, and culturally responsive practice. I am particularly passionate about bridging the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that future healthcare professionals develop not only the knowledge and skills required for effective care but also the compassion, cultural awareness, and empathy that underpin excellent mental health nursing.

I am also committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in nursing education and supporting initiatives that enhance the experiences and success of underrepresented students. Through my teaching, publications, and professional activities, I strive to contribute to the advancement of inclusive, person-centred mental healthcare and to inspire future generations of nurses to reach their full potential.
