Support for research students

We offer a wide range of support for research students at Kingston University including:

Training courses

We provide extensive training in research methods for all new research students. The workshop-based courses make good use of Kingston's excellent facilities. All supervisors also receive training in supervision methods.

Regular and constructive monitoring by faculty research staff is a key feature of our approach. For example, science students have sessions on using specialised equipment, which is essential for their CVs.

Graduate Research School

All postgraduate research students at Kingston have the support of the Graduate Research School as well as their home faculties. The Graduate Research School:

  • runs special training programmes for research students; and
  • provides advice and guidance on funding sources, regulations and other issues.

Graduate Centres

Graduate Centres are dedicated spaces for graduate students. These are ideal for private study, holding meetings/seminars or simply relaxing with a newspaper and coffee. The Faculty Offices will be able to provide directions to the nearest Graduate Centre. These provide:

  • a high quality social space;
  • good computing facilities; and
  • a seminar/training area.

Other support

As members of the wider student community, you can take advantage of a range of University-wide support for postgraduates.

We also support postgraduate research students through:

  • a personal training plan
At Kingston, we believe training is part of the job and we give you the opportunity to improve your study, research and life skills. Most postgraduate research students are offered training sessions, including project management, communication skills and information research and retrieval.
Your personal training plan, agreed with your supervisor, is a condition of registering with us.
  • a seminar programme
An active seminar programme provides a forum for you to test your ideas in front of fellow students and staff – in preparation for presenting at external conferences.
There is also a full programme of specialist research seminars, conferences, workshops and lectures that forms a stimulating part of the research culture at Kingston.
