Why choose this course?

If you have completed a Kingston University aircraft engineering foundation degree or one of the other Kingston University feeder courses, or you hold an EASA Cat B aircraft engineering licence, then this course is the perfect choice for topping up your qualification to a BEng(Hons).

Successful completion of your foundation degree will have guaranteed you a place on the course; there are no other hurdles to get over other than completing the application.

If you are an aircraft maintenance engineer who is in possession of an EASA category B licence then this course gives you a fantastic opportunity to gain academic recognition for the training you have undertaken to obtain your licence, and a chance to obtain an Aircraft Engineering BEng(Hons) in two years part time (or one year full time if you can get the time off work). This opportunity is possible because the Kingston University Aircraft Engineering Foundation Degree is basically a B licence course and we are able to use your EASA licence to give you credit for it. Unfortunately, it is only possible to give credit for two-thirds of an award, so we cannot give you the Foundation Degree. But, armed with 240 credits against the Foundation Degree from your licence, you only need to complete 120 credits (at Level 6) in order to achieve the honours degree.

For this course, the William Willis Aircraft Engineering Scholarship offers financial assistance to those unable to afford the cost of the tuition fees.

What you will study

You will study fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft performance and will analyse aircraft structures. You will evaluate materials for aircraft applications and the fundamental principles of air transport economics and their application to management decision-making.

You will also learn about the fundamentals of project planning and mapping, and will complete significant group and individual projects on industry-related topics.

Partner institutions

The following partners also deliver the top-up course:

  • Air Transport Training College (ATTC), Singapore. This course is open to local SAR Part-66 category B licence holders. Applicants need to pass an entry test and interview conducted by ATTC and may be expected to complete a short bridging course prior to starting the degree.
  • Nilia University, Malaysia. This course is currently only available to students who complete the Nilai University Diploma in Aircraft Engineering.

Please note: those studying the part-time route will be required to complete the Aircraft Maintenance Operations module before starting the Individual Project module. Taught modules will be delivered in alternate years and only one will be available in each year.

    • Discuss the various factors that influence decisions regarding the maintenance of airline fleets.
    • Explain, compare and contrast different approaches to maintaining aircraft and produce a realistic maintenance solution for a typical airline operation.
    • Understand the project planning process and be able to decompose a project and produce a comprehensive plan for its completion.
    • Work effectively as a member of a team and as an individual to achieve given goals in fixed timeframes and work independently on self improvement.
    • Produce project plans, presentations and reports, maintain a log book, and present information orally and in writing to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • This module aims to allow you to explore how employers within the air transport industry combines related areas such as aircraft design, maintenance, operations or repair and overhaul in order to make a profit. The module compares the operation of the air transport market with that in other sectors, in particular, looking at standard methods of recording and reporting financial performance.

    On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

    • Assess the potential impact of an airline's business strategy.
    • Discuss the major determinants of air transport supply, demand and cost.
    • Analyse business accounts and, thereby, be able to describe company performance.
    • By means of the appropriate planning and analysis, assess the options open to a business at any stage in its lifecycle.

  • The overarching aim of this individual project module is to provide each student with the opportunity to impress.  Working on a topic of their own choosing, the student, with minimal guidance from their supervisor, should apply approximately 300 hours of individual effort into the analysis of a problem and determination of the best solution and/or course of action.  The analysis can take a variety of forms ranging from an in-depth comparison of a number of already documented potential solutions to the collection and comparison of experimental and theoretical data. The topic investigated should ideally be of an aircraft maintenance or engineering nature, though other topics may be permitted with the agreement of the module leader.

    By completing a capstone project of this type, each student is able to demonstrate that they can draw together the information from all the other teaching and learning on the course and past learning and experience; and through innovation and analysis, demonstrate that they truly are independent learners.
