About
Microbiology became tangible once I started work as an assistant scientific officer at the Institute of Food Research, Reading within the rapid methods section of the microbiology department.
At IFR I worked on a variety of projects investigating rapid isolation and detection methods for category 2 food-borne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella species. The institute was a forwarding-thinking employer and it was common for those without specialist qualifications to achieve these on a part-time basis whilst working. In this manner I achieved my first degree.
I subsequently completed my PhD on Campylobacter jejuni at Reading University before joining Kingston in 2005 as a lecturer.
Originally a food microbiologist/microbial physiologist, I continue to pursue research in medical and veterinary microbiology alongside educational research into student attainment.
