About
Dr Lewis C. E. Mason is a Lecturer in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) with a keen interest in understanding the evolution and spread of antimicrobial resistant, sexually transmissible pathogens (such as Shigella species). His research focusses on the use of microbial genomics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, and wet-laboratory based experimentation to reveal both national and international transmission routes and understand the drivers of antimicrobial resistance, and how best to treat these extensively drug-resistant infections. He collaborates closely with clinical and public health colleagues in order to produce translatable scientific outputs, which have a direct positive influence on patient and public lives. He also works closely with patients, the public, and sexual health charities to identify specific areas of public-health need for sexually transmissible pathogen research, and co-designs proposals, protocols, and publications with these groups to ensure the research directly benefits the community which it is serving.

Courses taught
Dr Lewis C. E. Mason is interested in research focussing on understanding the evolution and spread of antimicrobial resistant, sexually transmissible infections. He uses both computational- and wet-laboratory-based techniques to facilitate outbreak investigation and ongoing genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance genes, both nationally and internationally. He is particularly passionate about patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), where he works alongside sexual health charities to ensure that his research is co-designed with input from lived-experience members of the public, and that his research outputs provide tangible positive impacts for the communities he serves.
