About
My research interests lie in analytical and materials science and cover development of analytical methods, environmental monitoring and remediation to increase access of safe drinking water (6th UN SDG) and improve the environment.
I am member and author of the UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP). EEAP informs the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on matters arising from ozone depletion, UV radiation and the interaction of climate change. I contribute to the Royal Society of Chemistry Science Policy Panel Engagement group feeding views from the scientific community on Chemicals, Waste and Reduction of Pollution to the UN.
I led business incubators in Ukraine that made a social impact thanks to a fantastic Ukrainian team (2018-2023).
Oxburgh award of the Institute of Measurement and Control (2024).
The key questions that drive my research are:
- How can we improve analytical approaches to gain more information?
- How can we improve water, soil, air and food safety?
- How to translate fundamental research in solutions with commercial and social impact?

I work towards pushing the barriers of analytical chemistry. I am specialist in chromatography-mass spectrometry and in the analysis of complex matrices, areas which are valuable when applied to solve challenges. I am particularly interested environmental monitoring and remediation. I carry out research to remove contaminants that pose a major threat to the ecosystems due to their toxicity and high mobility, and can therefore contaminate fresh water and affect our health, e.g. nanoparticles, pesticides, perfluoroalkyls, pharmaceuticals. I am involved in the development of materials with tailored structure and/or reactivity for the removal of the targeted type of contamination or recovery of specific substances for the benefit of the environment such as nutrients. I am the team leader of the Environment Health and Food Safety group (EHFSA).
