Professor Chris Cairns

Head of Department of Pharmacy, Professor of Pharmacy Practice


I qualified as a pharmacist in 1997 after graduating from Strathclyde University and preregistration training at Stobhill General Hospital in Glasgow. There then followed work as a hospital pharmacist and study for an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, obtained in 1979. Following clinical pharmacy positions in Edinburgh and at St. George's Hospital in London I was appointed the Director of the Pharmacy Academic Practice Unit at St. George's Hospital in 1992. Subsequently I moved to University Hospital Lewisham in 1999 as Director of Pharmacy and Dietetics. In addition I worked for some time as the Divisional Co-ordinator for Clinical Support Services. In 2004 I took up the post of Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the new School of Pharmacy at Kingston University, London. In 2006 I was appointed Head of Department of Pharmacy, a role that I continue in today. I teach on a variety of subjects including pharmacy law and ethics, clinical practice, ethical and clinical decision making and pharmacoeconomics. In addition I practice as a pharmacist at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust with education and training and R&D responsibilities. I am also the Trust's pharmacist lead for non-medical prescribing. My clinical and research interests include critical care and emergency care, patient safety, pharmacoeconomics, IV therapy, pharmacokinetics and pharmaceutical outcomes as well as the application of law and ethical practice in pharmacy and healthcare. I have a number of research publications, and written a number of book chapters, and was one of the editors of the textbook 'Medicines in the Elderly'.

I have a number of research interests including patient safety, pharmacoeconomics, workload measurement, electronic prescribing, pharmacokinetics and pharmaceutical outcomes. I have also worked with a number of NHS bodies carrying out clinical audits in a variety of areas including the use of Patient Group Directions, anti-microbial use and medicine use in paediatrics.
