About
With over three decades of experience, including 15 years in senior roles, I have significantly advanced the field of molecular biosciences through both teaching and research. My academic journey began with a degree in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) from the University of Reading, followed by a doctorate in Zoology (Cell and Molecular Biology). Most of my career has been in academia, with a brief period at the Babraham Institute. My expertise lies in identifying novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets, as well as pedagogic research, where I have authored over 100 articles, including research papers, reviews, book chapters, conference proceedings, and two patents.
Currently, I serve as the Employability Lead (since 2024) and Accreditation Lead for Royal Society of Biology programmes (since 2019), in addition to my role as Associate Professor at the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry. Previously, I have served as the School Director of Learning and Teaching (2016-2024), Human Tissue Authority (HTA) Designated Individual (2014-2017, 2021-2022) and Course Leader for Biochemistry/Medical Biochemistry (2010-2020). My roles encompass leadership, providing strategic direction, and oversight of learning, teaching, assessment, and the student experience. I have also ensured compliance with regulatory and quality assurance processes and contributed to policy making. In the wider scientific community, I engage in scientific outreach, have sat on the editorial boards of several journals, and actively participate in professional societies such as the Royal Society of Biology, Biochemical Society, Society for Endocrinology, and Zoological Society of London.
I am recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), a Fellow of Enterprise Educators UK (FEEUK), Chartered Biologist (CBiol), and Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach). My contributions to teaching and learning have been acknowledged with Kingston University's Provost's Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence and several other university awards, highlighting my sustained contribution to employability, enterprise, professional development, and the inclusive curriculum.
Nationally, my teaching has been celebrated through multiple prestigious awards that highlight my significant impact on student outcomes and contributions to the higher education teaching profession. I am recognised as a National Teaching Fellow (NTF, 2024), a recipient of the UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT) Association’s Individual Award for ‘Outstanding Student Support’ (2025), and a highly commended recipient of the National Enterprise Educator Award for Inclusive Enterprise Education (2022). Additionally, I was a finalist in the Pearson HE Innovate Awards (2022).

Courses taught
My scientific research background has primarily focussed on identifying novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Notable discoveries include the identification of an association of neurokinin B (NKB) with pre-eclampsia, the endokinins (novel tachykinins), the six members of the apolipoprotein L (apoL) protein family and splice variants of pregnancy associated plasma protein-E (PAPP-E, PAPP-A2). Additionally, I have conducted research in virology, transgenics, receptor pharmacology, and projects related to the adrenal gland and placenta.
I am also involved in a range of pedagogic research projects, including those related to the student experience, progression metrics, awarding gaps, understanding commuting students, the inclusive curriculum, personal tutoring, and professional development.
I have published over 100 articles, including research, review, book chapters, conference proceedings and two patents. I have been an invited reviewer for several journals, evaluating both scientific and pedagogic papers. Furthermore, I have served as an invited external examiner for numerous MRes and PhDs theses in both scientific and pedagogic research.
