Accounting & Finance BSc(Hons) with business experience: Work placements

We make sure you make the most of your time at Kingston

All our business degrees include integrated business experience within the three-year programme comprising:

  • our Business Readiness Programme;
  • professional pathways and professional memberships;
  • a placement option – you can choose from:
    • a work placement in an organisation (private, public, not for profit and where possible you will be paid);
    • study abroad;
    • a research work placement relevant for those considering an academic career; or
    • an entrepreneurial experience that supports you through either a work placement in a funded start-up or starting your own business (including multi-disciplinary support and seed funding)

This is in the time it takes just to gain a degree in other universities, showing the value for time and money offered here at Kingston.

  • Improve your career choices – business experience and placements help you to make better-informed career choices and help you stand out from the competition when you look for a job.
  • Help your studies – statistics indicate that on average students who do placements get better results in their final year.
  • Develop your professional skills – preparing you for your career
  • Where possible, they provide you with a salary – which could help to reduce your student debt.

In addition, each year many of our students receive graduate job offers from their placement employer.

How we help you

During your first and second years, in addition to developing your subject knowledge, you will receive a substantial programme of skills training and support from our Business and Professional Experience team to ensure you are 'work ready'. These skills are welcomed by employers and students alike, as they ensure you make the most of both your study time and your business experience.

As well as business skills, this programme includes development of your CV, cover letters, and getting ready for interviews. You will also learn how to use your placement to benefit your future career. Part of business life is being able to make successful applications for work or start-ups – our training will give you these skills. Kingston University uses its wealth of contacts to help you get the best possible placement. It enjoys an excellent relationship with a wide range of organisations, from global multinationals to small cutting-edge enterprises and the public sector. These links also ensure that the calibre of Kingston University graduates is recognised by potential employers, many of whom visit us on campus to meet our students.

We will also provide you with support during your placement option. You will be in contact with us at least once a month whilst on placement, as well as receiving additional mentoring in the workplace. This will help you make the most of your learning, applying theory to practice, and really make a success of your placement.

Professional memberships

To become a fully qualified accountant you will need to be a member of a professional body, take its exams and have a record of three years' relevant work experience. As part of this course, not only do you have the opportunity to be exempt from some of the professional exams, but the work placement may also serve to contribute to the three years' work experience requirement.

The course offers partial exemptions to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) in England and Wales and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants professional qualifications.

There is also the opportunity to take the highly regarded PRINCE2 project management qualification, again giving you an edge in your future career.
