3D Design

The department comprises a close-knit collaborative family of studio-based courses the successes of which are built on the quality of our teaching. The content and structure of our courses is inspired by engagement with our commercial and community partners and informed by material and manufacturing collaborations and academic research.

We deliver an environment for experiential learning – both digitally and in tangible use of materials. Students work with live clients in demanding real-world contexts. This has included projects with:

  • Transport for London
  • Foster & Partners
  • John Lewis
  • Heals Ltd
  • Speedo
  • British Airways
  • and English Heritage.

Experimentation, insight and intelligent working are essential elements of our collaborative and interdisciplinary studio-based culture and students are empowered to prototype and continuously develop their personal visions and design ideas.

From day one, our students are immersed in London's dynamic design culture through hosted industry talks with speakers from diverse backgrounds and across disciplines; and visits to the world-class design studios, exhibitions, environments and businesses that are helping define the future.

Undergraduate courses

3D Design degrees at Kingston School of Art allow students to identify their real passions and preferred career paths. There's no straight-jacketing – we're interested in the way you think as an individual and the way you see the world as a designer and commentator.

From day one, we engage with our students on a professional level. We'll give you the skills and confidence to develop and present your work and connect with other practising designers and professionals. You will be mentored by designers and specialists from the UK's top design studios who will challenge you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. You will be empowered by our amazing 3D workshop, one of the best and largest in the UK, to translate ideas in to tangible design solutions across the interior, product, furniture and sustainable design spectrum.

Postgraduate courses

At postgraduate level, we offer Graduate Diploma Creative Practice, Interior Design MAProduct & Furniture Design MA and Sustainable Design MA. Courses are taught by the highest quality staff and maintain Kingston School of Art's ethos of understanding design through making. Practice-based exploration is at the fore, underpinned by socially-led critical thinking.

Consequently, the quality of our workshop facilities is critical. Kingston School of Art has some of the best workshop facilities for 3D design in a UK university. Our workshops cover a vast range of technologies and methodologies, and are available six days a week. Students work alongside practitioners from other disciplines, skilled technicians and academic staff. This facilitates cross-pollination of ideas and practice.

All our staff are widely-networked within 3D design. They are active practitioners and have often held roles with leading brands and organisations. Their contacts enable us to access leading-edge thinking and insights into emerging practice, as well as developing the professional network of our senior students.
