3D Design

The department comprises of a close-knit collaborative family of courses. We offer Interior Design BA(Hons), Product & Furniture Design BA(Hons), Product & Furniture Design MA and Sustainable Design MA.

The success of the department is built on the quality of our practice-based teaching and our engagement with real world partners. These include world-class global design agencies, industry projects, material and manufacturing collaborations and academic research partnerships. We have recently run projects with architects Foster & Partners, John Lewis, Heals Ltd, Transport for London, Speedo and English Heritage.

We deliver an environment for experiential learning. Students develop hands-on experience with live clients in demanding real world contexts. They are challenged to "design through making" and are empowered to prototype and continuously develop their personal visions and design ideas.

From day one, our students are encouraged to immerse themselves in London's dynamic design culture. We host talks and visit the design studios, exhibitions, makers, environments and businesses that are defining what the future could be.

Experimentation, insight and intelligent working are essential elements of our culture. The department values collaborative and interdisciplinary working and as such is placed to mirror and inform the next generation of designers.

Postgraduate courses

At postgraduate level, we offer Product & Furniture Design MA and Sustainable Design MA. Courses are taught by the highest quality staff, including new course leader Sebastian Bergne, who has a world-class profile as an industrial designer, and Dr Paul Micklethwaite, a leading expert in design for sustainability.

The courses maintain Kingston School of Art's ethos of understanding design through making. Practice-based exploration is at the fore, underpinned by socially-led critical thinking.

Consequently, the quality of our workshop facilities is critical. Kingston School of Art has the best workshop facilities for 3D design in a UK university. Our workshops cover a vast range of technologies and methodologies, and are available six days a week. Students work alongside practitioners from other disciplines, skilled technicians and academic staff. This facilitates cross-pollination of ideas and practice.

All our staff are widely-networked within 3D design. They are active practitioners and have often held roles with leading brands and organisations. Their contacts enable us to access leading-edge thinking and insights into emerging practice, as well as developing the professional network of our senior students.

Kingston School of Art has ambitions to develop a masters' programme in 3D Design that will rival the best in the world. We are seeking talented design graduates to join us on that journey.
